PARTICIPANT PARKING (Very Important)
We have a beautiful venue and one reason is that there are no large parking lots.  Please
carpool with at least one other participant if you can possibly do so.  Parking will be on a
first-come, first-served basis.  We ask that you not arrive prior to 7:30, when our parking
attendants will begin working.  8:00 AM is an ideal time to arrive.  If you arrive later and are
required to park at The University of New England, we will have a shuttle that can carry your
extra gear to Hattie’s (directly across from Transition).  You can then ride your bike down
and claim your gear.  We will have bike racks there for this purpose.  Please allow adequate
time for parking so that you have plenty of time for race day preparations.
If you purchased a premium parking spot on imATHLETE.com, you will be given a parking
pass, at packet pick up, to display at Hattie’s.   If you do not go to packet pickup on
Thursday or Friday, the parking attendant will have your name and pass at Hattie’s.  (We
have now sold all of these passes.)

SPECTATOR PARKING
We ask that spectators also try to carpool.  We have Spectator Parking at The University of
New England. We strongly suggest that spectators park in these lots.  We will have a shuttle
bus departing every 20 minutes from 8:00 until 9:40.  Please note that dogs are not allowed
on the bus. This bus will drop the spectators off at Hattie’s.  Return buses will operate from
12:30 until 1:15.  Use of the remote lot and shuttle bus will insure that spectators have a
short walk.  Spectators that do not utilize the bus may have a 1-1.5 mile walk to/from
Transition.

SPECTATOR INFORMATION
Spectators are not allowed into the Transition Area.  We have a path that will allow
spectators to travel beside Transition and get to and from the beach to see the Swim and
Duathlon.  We then have a controlled crossing over the bike start/finish and run finish that
allows spectators to reach the finish line and vendor area.  We will have food available for
purchase for spectators.   (Please keep in mind that we cannot let you onto the portion of the
beach where the athletes are finishing their swim or Duathlon run.  We also cannot let you
join an athlete for the finish.  We do not want anyone’s safety jeopardized.  It is a violation of
USAT rules to join racers on any part of the course.

second is at the
Northern York County Family YMCA on Friday, 9/16 between 4:00 & 7:
00PM.
USAT rules are very specific regarding packet pick up.  You cannot pick up
anyone else’s packet. You must have a photo ID.  If you don’t have a photo ID we
cannot allow you to pick up your packet.  If you are a USAT member, you must have
your USAT card.  If you forget your card, USAT requires that you sign a waiver and
pay the one day license fee of $10, no exceptions.  All members of relay teams must
be present at packet pickup.

If you are 21 or older, we will be attaching a Tyvek bracelet on your wrist at packet pick up.
This bracelet must remain on your wrist if you want to enjoy the post-race beer on Saturday.
Timing chips will not be distributed at packet pick up.  You will get this just after body
marking on race day.  Packet pickup will also be available on race day at the registration
table from 8:00-9:00. We encourage all athletes to have their packets prior to race day if
possible. Registration will be open until the race is full.  We will only accept cash or check for
registration sign ups after online registration closes. PARTICIPANTS THAT REGISTER
AFTER SEPTEMBER 15 AT PACKET PICKUP LOCATIONS OR AT THE VENUE WILL
BE REQUIRED TO PAY AN ADDITIONAL $10 DONATION TO THE NYC YMCA FOR THIS
LATE OPPORTUNITY.  Race-day Registration and packet pickup closes at 9:00AM.

Transition Area
Opens up at 8AM Saturday morning.  Bike racks will be numbered to indicate which rack
you should use.  Please do not bring excessive equipment into Transition.  The volunteers
will be happy to answer your questions.  There will also be a USAT Race Official present to
answer questions and address your concerns.  As a courtesy to all athletes, you will not be
allowed back into the transition area to retrieve your bike and belongings until after all
athletes have finished the bike course.  This will be at approximately 12:05 PM.   We will
have a Dry Clothes table at the finish line.  Temperatures will be cool on Saturday, so you
should plan on leaving dry clothing at this table.
YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED INTO
TRANSITION TO GET DRY CLOTHING BEFORE THE LAST CYCLIST RETURNS.
Once transition does reopen, you should gather up all your gear and your bike and exit the
transition.  You must exit through one of the check areas and we will be comparing your body
mark numbers with your bike number, so keep all numbers on you and your bike until after
leaving transition.

The Kennebunkport Bicycle Company will have a tent outside of Transition.  They will have
bicycle mechanics on duty.

Directions to Mainiac & Transition
Transition is located at the public parking area at Gil Boucher Park in Biddeford
Pool.  Entrance to this area is directly across the street from
Hattie's Restaurant which is
located at the east end of Mile Stretch Road in Biddeford Pool.  The immediate road to
transition off Mile Stretch is called Gilbert Place.  This road is gravel and splits a few yards
down.  Stay left, on Beach House Road into transition.  These two gravel roads will be
closed to all traffic on race day.  They are both part of the bike and run courses.

Mainiac Race Day
Once you've parked, make your way down Gilbert Place.  The first table that you reach will
be for packet pickup and race day registration.  Assuming that you have picked up your
packet, you can skip this table and go to Body Marking.  Please make sure that you have
the bike number affixed to your bike frame prior to Body Marking. Volunteers will body mark
you with your number and age before you proceed to the transition area. You will then stop to
get your timing chip from All Sports Events Timing.  Next, head to bike inspection, located at
the entrance to the Transition Area.  You will then be allowed into the Transition Area to rack
your bike and to setup your gear.  All athletes need be out of the transition area by 9:45 AM
and should be at the swim start for a mandatory pre-race meeting at 9:50. You must wear
the color-coded swim cap issued at registration and be ready to start with your swim wave
that will be given to you at packet pickup.
We have chip timing from All Sports Events Timing and Event Services. Please remember
to wear your timing chip on your left ankle for the entire race.
The first Swim Wave will start at 10:00 AM.  Typical ocean water temperature in September
is 62 degrees.
We strongly recommend the use of wetsuits and reserve the right to
require their use.
(Wet suits are available for rental or purchase from Aquaholics in
Kennebunk)  There will be lifeguards, boats and kayaks on the swim course to assist you if
needed. The SWIM course is a counter clockwise rectangular 1/4 mile swim.

After completing the swim, you will transition to the 14.85 mile bike course. You must buckle
your helmet anytime that you are on your bike.   Do not get on your bike in Transition.  Wait
until you have crossed the clearly marked Bike Mount line. No roads are completely closed
to traffic.
It is your responsibility to know the race course, to follow the race official’s
instructions, and to observe all USAT rules.
All turns will be clearly marked and will be
manned by volunteers and/or police officers.
Please pay attention!! Course maps are
available on the website, www.mainaictri.com. Please use caution and brake when cycling
downhill -- you will pick up speed very quickly!  Always stay to the right of the roadway and
never cross the center line.  Do not ride side by side and remember that you must maintain
a distance of three bike lengths between you and the person in front of you.  Once you are
less than this distance, you have 15 seconds to complete a pass.  Always pass on the left.
When you return on the bike remember that the last portion of the course is on the sand/dirt
road.  Use extra caution in this area.  Please dismount from your bike at the clearly marked
Bike Dismount line before entering the transition area.

After the bike you will transition to the 3.1 mile run.  (For those of you that are seasoned
Mainiacs, we have changed the direction on the run course to a counter clockwise run so
that you will be running against vehicular traffic this year.)  Please remember to wear your
race number on the front at all times during the run. There will be one aid station at
approximately 1.5 miles.  The aid station will supply water and HEED.  No roads are
completely closed to traffic.
It is your responsibility to know the race course, to follow
the race official's instructions, and to observe all USAT rules.
All turns will be clearly
marked and will be manned by volunteers and/or police officers.
Please pay attention!!
Runners will run on the left side of the road, out and back. No roads are completely closed to
traffic.

What if the surf is too rough on race day?
If the surf is judged to be too rough at start time we will switch to a duathlon race. Basically,
you will do a one mile run in place of the swim and thus you will do a run, then the normal
bike and then the normal run.

Relay Teams
As mentioned earlier, ALL members of a relay team must be present together to pick up
their race packet. All relay team members must get body-marked together. For numbers, the
swimmer will wear the color-coded swim cap, the cyclist will fasten the bike frame number to
his/her bike, and adhere the helmet number to his/her helmet. The runner will wear the
official bib number, visible from the front,  to cross the finish line. Swimmers will exit the
water and will hand the timing chip to the cyclist in the RELAY EXCHANGE Area. Then, the
cyclist will proceed to his/her bike rack.  Following the bike, the cyclist will rack their bike,
and then proceed to the RELAY EXCHANGE Area to hand the timing chip to the runner who
will then proceed with the run. NO RELAY TEAM MEMBERS ARE TO WAIT IN THE
TRANSITION AREA. YOU WILL Tag IN THE RELAY EXCHANGE AREA ONLY.
